Title: The Healing Power of Fish Omega-3s and Collagen from Cold Water Fish for Chronic Wounds

Speaker: Dr. Suzanne J. Bakewell, Omeza

Host: Dr. Djik Maouyo

Abstract: Nonhealing chronic wounds are a global problem, with mortality rates and management costs exceeding many common cancers. There are many reasons for this worldwide pandemic, including an increase in peripheral arterial disease, diabetes and obesity. Currently, treatment consists of cleaning the wound, debridement, wound dressings, compression bandages and off-loading. There are hundreds of advanced wound care treatments available, but amputation continues to increase at alarming rates.

A novel treatment strategy was designed to address all the steps in the wound healing process and to focus on the major obstacles that stall wounds. Formulations based on Omega 3’s EPA and DHA and collagen-derived hydrolysate from cold water fish are showing promising results with increased healing rates in this marginalized population of patients.
